Snake Gourd Seeds — MI Short (පතෝල MI කොට) — 12-15 seeds of the MI short-fruited snake gourd variety. The “kota” (short) type produces compact 30–40 cm fruits — easier to manage in smaller gardens and great for single-curry portions.

Growing season: Yala season (March–August) is ideal. Also performs in early Maha (October). Germination in 7–10 days.

Climate fit: Suited to all Sri Lankan lowland and intermediate zones. Particularly productive in Kurunegala, Puttalam, and Ratnapura districts.

How to sow: Soak seeds overnight. Sow 2 cm deep, 80 cm apart. Provide trellis or pergola support — vines climb 2.5–3.5 m.

Care: Full sun, fertile loamy soil. Water every 2–3 days. The short variety has slightly higher fruit density — apply Eco Max Bio Bull and Green Boost alternately every 3 weeks. Pinch lateral shoots after the first 1 m to focus energy into fruiting.

Harvest: Begins 60–75 days after sowing. Pick when fruits are 30–35 cm long and still tender. The shorter size makes them ideal for single-meal cooking — no need to store cut pieces.

Culinary use: Perfect for Sri Lankan pathola curry, fish ambul thiyal sides, stir-fries with mustard and curry leaves, or grated into vegetable mallun.
