Red Amaranth Seeds (රතු තම්පලා) — high-germination red amaranth seeds. Rathu Thampala is a Sri Lankan leafy green with brilliant red leaves, extremely high in iron and vitamins, and one of the easiest leafy greens to grow.
Growing season: Year-round in Sri Lanka. Avoid the wettest monsoon weeks. Germination in 3–5 days. Quick harvest in 25–35 days.
Climate fit: Grows in all Sri Lankan zones — lowland, intermediate, and up-country. Highly heat-tolerant and adaptable.
How to sow: Broadcast or sow in shallow rows 0.5 cm deep, 15 cm apart. Thin to 10 cm spacing after first true leaves. Excellent for container gardens, balconies, and raised beds.
Care: Full sun. Keep soil consistently moist. Heavy nitrogen feeder — apply Eco Max Green Boost or HS Liquid Fertilizer every 10 days. Cut-and-come-again harvesting: pick outer leaves to keep the plant producing.
Harvest: First cuttings ready in 25–35 days. Each plant produces for 8–12 weeks. Yields 200–500 g per plant over its productive life.
Culinary use: Thampala mallun (the classic Sri Lankan side dish), curries with grated coconut, soups, or stir-fried with garlic. The red leaves stain the rice red — visually striking and nutritionally outstanding.
