Thalana Batu Seeds (තලන බටු) — traditional Sri Lankan thalana batu seeds (Solanum macrocarpon). A wild relative of brinjal, prized in Sri Lankan and South Indian Ayurvedic cuisine for its slightly bitter, medicinal qualities.
Growing season: Year-round in Sri Lanka. Best transplanted at the start of Yala (March–April) or Maha (October). Germination in 10–14 days.
Climate fit: Adapted to all Sri Lankan lowland and intermediate zones. Especially productive in dry zone areas (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota).
How to sow: Start in seedling trays with light potting mix. Sow 0.5 cm deep. Transplant after 40–45 days when seedlings have 5–6 leaves. Space 60 cm apart.
Care: Full sun, fertile loamy soil. Apply Eco Max Bio Bull at planting and Green Boost when flowering. Stake plants — thalana batu is tall (1.5–2 m) and prone to wind damage. Water deeply but infrequently.
Harvest: First fruits in 80–100 days. Pick small fruits (2–3 cm) for cooking — they get more bitter as they mature. Plants produce continuously for 6–9 months.
Culinary use: Thalana batu curry with coconut and chillies, traditional Sri Lankan tempered side dish, Ayurvedic decoctions for digestion. The bitter undertone balances rich coconut-based curries.
