Yardlong Bean Seeds (මෑ) — 25-30 premium yardlong bean seeds. Mae karal is one of Sri Lanka’s most-loved climbing vegetables — long tender pods, prolific production, and packed with plant protein.

Growing season: Year-round in Sri Lanka. Best results in Yala (March–August). Germination in 5–7 days. First harvest in 50–60 days.

Climate fit: Grows throughout Sri Lanka’s lowland and intermediate zones. Outstanding in Gampaha, Kalutara, Anuradhapura, and Kurunegala. Tolerates moderate heat well.

How to sow: Soak seeds for 6 hours. Sow 2 cm deep, 30 cm apart along a trellis. Direct sowing recommended. Provide 2 m tall bamboo poles or netting for vines to climb.

Care: Full sun, well-drained soil. As a legume, mae fixes its own nitrogen — keep N-rich fertilizer light. Eco Max Bio Bull cow dung pellets at planting supplies phosphorus and potassium. Mulch the base. Water every 2–3 days during fruiting.

Harvest: Pods ready when 30–45 cm long and tender. Pick every 2 days — the more you pick, the more pods form. Each vine produces for 3–4 months, yielding 1.5–2 kg of pods.

Culinary use: Mae karal curry with coconut, tempered with mustard, stir-fried with garlic and chilli, or chopped into rice and curry combos. A daily Sri Lankan favourite.
