Kang Kung (කංකුං)

Kang Kung Seeds (කංකුං) — water spinach seeds for fast-growing home garden greens. Kang kung (also Kankun) is the ultimate quick crop — ready in just 25–30 days, prolific, and packed with iron and vitamin A.

Growing season: Year-round in Sri Lanka. Best yields in warm wet weather. Germination in 4–7 days.

Climate fit: Excellent across Sri Lanka’s wet zone (Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Ratnapura). Tolerates partial shade and damp soil better than most leafy greens.

How to sow: Soak seeds 24 hours. Sow 1 cm deep in moist soil, 15 cm apart. Can grow in regular garden beds, water-logged areas, or even in containers with daily watering.

Care: Sun to partial shade. Loves wet, fertile soil — kang kung grows naturally in paddy field margins. Heavy nitrogen feeder — apply Eco Max Green Boost every 2 weeks or HS Liquid Fertilizer weekly. Pick stems 5 cm above soil — they regrow rapidly.

Harvest: First cutting in 25–30 days. Cut-and-come-again: harvest weekly for 2–3 months. Each square metre yields 2–4 kg of greens over the season.

Culinary use: Kankun mallun, tempered with garlic and chilli, stir-fried with shrimp paste (Chinese style), or in clear soups. A Sri Lankan everyday green.
