Yard Long Bean (මස් මෑ)

Yard Long Bean Seeds — Mas Mae (මස් මෑ) — premium “Mas Mae” yard long bean seeds, named for the fleshy, meaty texture of the pods. A heritage Sri Lankan variety prized for its dense, satisfying texture in curries and stir-fries.

Growing season: Year-round. Best yields in Yala (March–August). Germination in 5–7 days. First pods in 55–60 days.

Climate fit: Grows in all Sri Lankan lowland and intermediate zones. Particularly strong in Kurunegala, Kandy, and Polonnaruwa.

How to sow: Soak seeds for 6 hours. Sow 2 cm deep, 30 cm apart along a 2 m trellis. Direct sow only.

Care: Full sun, well-drained soil. Beans fix their own nitrogen — use phosphorus-and-potassium-rich amendments rather than heavy nitrogen. Eco Max Bio Bull at planting works well. Mulch the base.

Harvest: Pick pods at 40–55 cm for maximum tenderness. The “mas” texture means even slightly larger pods stay tender. Each vine yields 1.5–2.5 kg over 3 months.

Culinary use: The thicker pod walls hold up beautifully in long-cooked curries, traditional Sri Lankan mae karal maluwa, kottu-style stir-fries, and tempered side dishes. The “meaty” texture makes it satisfying as a vegetarian protein.
