Yard Long Bean – Red (රතු මෑ)

Red Yard Long Bean Seeds (රතු මෑ) — striking red-purple yard long bean seeds. The red variety is a Sri Lankan heritage favourite — slightly sweeter, visually stunning in the garden and on the plate, and high in anthocyanin antioxidants.

Growing season: Year-round. Best yields in Yala (March–August). Germination in 5–7 days. First harvest in 55–65 days.

Climate fit: Grows in all Sri Lankan lowland and intermediate zones. Excellent garden performer in Gampaha, Galle, Matara, and Kurunegala.

How to sow: Soak overnight. Sow 2 cm deep, 30 cm apart along a 2 m trellis. Bamboo poles, fence wire, or pergolas all work as supports.

Care: Full sun, well-drained soil. Light nitrogen, more phosphorus and potassium. Eco Max Bio Bull at planting, then a foliar feed of HS Liquid Fertilizer every 3 weeks once flowering begins. Mulch the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvest: Red pods at 35–50 cm. The colour fades a little when cooked but stays beautifully red in fresh salads. Pick every 2–3 days. Each vine produces 1.5–2 kg over 3 months.

Culinary use: Beautiful in salads where the colour pops, traditional Sri Lankan curry with coconut, tempered side dish, or quick stir-fries. Great conversation starter in home gardens.
