Snake Gourd Seeds — TA-2 (පතෝල) — 12-15 high-germination snake gourd seeds of the popular TA-2 variety. Pathola is a classic Sri Lankan curry vegetable with a mild, cooling flavour and traditional Ayurvedic credentials.
Growing season: Best planted in Yala (March–August) or early Maha (September–November). Germination in 7–10 days. First harvest in 65–80 days.
Climate fit: Grows well in Sri Lanka’s lowland zones — Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota, and Galle districts give excellent results.
How to sow: Soak seeds for 12 hours. Sow 2 cm deep, 1 m apart along a trellis or fence. Snake gourd vines climb 3–4 m and produce hanging fruits.
Care: Full sun, well-drained soil. Pathola needs strong trellising for straight fruits — hang fruits over the trellis edge to keep them straight (curled gourds are still edible but less marketable). Feed with Eco Max Bio Bull at planting and organic fertilizers every 3 weeks. Pollinate by hand in the morning if bee activity is low.
Harvest: Young fruits at 30–60 cm are most tender. Pick every 2–3 days for continuous production. Each vine yields 8–12 fruits over a 3-month period.
Culinary use: Pathola curry with chilli, fish curry sides, stir-fries, and traditional Sri Lankan mallun with grated coconut. Believed in Ayurveda to cool the body.
