Spinach Seeds — Niwiti (නිවිති) — 35-40 fast-germinating spinach seeds. Niwiti is Sri Lanka’s beloved leafy green, rich in iron, calcium, and vitamin A. Perfect for daily mallun, curries, and porridge.
Growing season: Year-round in Sri Lanka, with best results in cooler months (October–February). Germination in 4–7 days.
Climate fit: Performs in all zones but thrives in mid-country (Kandy, Matale) and up-country areas. In hot lowlands, plant in partial shade or during cooler periods.
How to sow: Broadcast or sow in shallow rows 1 cm deep, 20 cm apart. Thin to 10 cm spacing after germination. Niwiti grows quickly — ideal for container gardens, balcony pots, and raised beds.
Care: Partial to full sun. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Niwiti is a heavy feeder of nitrogen — feed weekly with Eco Max Green Boost or HS Liquid Fertilizer. Pick outer leaves regularly to encourage new growth from the centre.
Harvest: First leaves ready in 25–35 days. Cut-and-come-again harvesting keeps plants productive for 2–3 months. Each plant yields 200–400 g of leaves.
Culinary use: Niwiti mallun (the classic Sri Lankan side), kanji (rice porridge with greens), curry, or in fresh wraps. Essential in traditional Sinhala nutrition.
