Yard Long Bean (මෑ කරල් – පොලොං)

Yard Long Bean Seeds — Polong (මෑ කරල් – පොලොං) — premium open-pollinated yard long bean seeds of the popular Polong variety. Polong is known for its extra-long pods (up to 60 cm), robust vines, and resistance to common Sri Lankan bean pests.

Growing season: Year-round, with best yields in Yala (March–August). Germination in 5–7 days. First pods in 50–55 days.

Climate fit: Strong performer in Sri Lanka’s dry zone — Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya, Mannar. Also excellent in lowland wet zone gardens with good drainage.

How to sow: Soak seeds 6 hours. Sow 2 cm deep, 30 cm apart. Provide tall trellis (2 m bamboo or netting). Direct sowing only — beans dislike root disturbance.

Care: Full sun, well-drained soil. Light fertilization — beans fix nitrogen. Use Eco Max Bio Bull cow dung pellets at sowing for slow-release phosphorus and potassium. Mulch the base with rice husk or coconut coir. Pinch the growing tip when vines reach 2 m to encourage side shoots.

Harvest: Pick pods at 45–55 cm — still tender, before seeds bulge. Daily harvesting extends production. Each vine produces 2–2.5 kg over 3–4 months.

Culinary use: Mae karal curry with coconut milk, tempered with mustard and curry leaves, stir-fries, or chopped raw into salads. Traditional with rice and curry.
