Wing Bean (දඹල)

Wing Bean Seeds (දඹල) — high-germination Dambala seeds for your home protein patch. Every part of the winged bean plant is edible — pods, leaves, flowers, tubers, and dry seeds — making it one of the most efficient vegetables you can grow.

Growing season: Best at the start of Maha (September–October), allowing the vine to develop through Sri Lanka’s cooler months. Germination in 7–10 days.

Climate fit: Performs across Sri Lanka’s lowland wet zone, dry zone, and intermediate zone. Particularly productive in Gampaha, Kalutara, Anuradhapura, and Hambantota.

How to sow: Soak seeds 12 hours. Sow 2 cm deep, 1 m apart. Vines climb aggressively to 4 m — needs strong, tall trellis (sturdy bamboo, fence, or pergola).

Care: Full sun, well-drained soil. Light nitrogen (legume fixes own N). Eco Max Bio Bull cow dung pellets at planting. Mulch heavily. Hand-pollinate flowers in the morning if bee activity is low.

Harvest: Young pods at 10–15 cm are most tender — pick every 2 days. The same plant produces for 4–6 months, yielding 2–3 kg of pods plus edible flowers and leaves throughout.

Culinary use: Dambala curry, stir-fried with garlic, traditional Sri Lankan sambol, tempered side dish. Young leaves in mallun. Tubers cooked like potato. A complete protein source.
